Up to 40% of children suffer from allergies which are the most frequently reported chronic illness among North American children. Nearly 8% of school-aged children have asthma... making it the most common chronic disease among that group.

The rate is rising more rapidly in preschool-aged children than any other group and middle ear infections are the most common children's disease requiring a healthcare visit.

Although there are various theories, the two that are the most logical to me are (1) the construction of "tighter", more energy efficient homes and offices since the 70's, which reduces ventilation and increases indoor humidity and (2) the increased popularity of cool water detergents and cold water washing (since hot water washing helps to kill dust mites).

There are many types of allergies which are caused by both indoor as well as outdoor environments. The two biggest risk factors for the development of allergic disease are found in the indoor environment. These factors are dust mites and pet allergens which between the two affect 80% of allergy and asthma sufferers! These allergens not only trigger allergy attacks but the chemicals released during such attacks (called mediators) can, in turn trigger asthma attacks.

The area of the home that seems to be the most problematic to allergy & asthma sufferers is the bedroom for a couple of reasons... (1) that's where we spend a 3rd of our lives, and (2) our mattresses and pillows serve as a haven for dust mites!
